GEILSTON BAY TENNIS CLUB SELECTION POLICY

SENIOR TEAMS AND EVENTS

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Selection Policy is to define the manner in which representative teams are to be selected. This is to ensure that:

Members are aware of the basis for selections prior to submitting themselves for selection in an event, and

The selection process is consistent.

APPLICATION

The Selection Policy applies to the selection of all representative Club teams and is applied to events in a manner that reflects the Club’s requirements for that event.

Members will be provided with the opportunity to make themselves available for all events.

The Selection Policy is made up of two main elements as set out below:

Selection Criteria, which identify the factors which may be considered when making selections, and

Criteria Priority, which defines the order in which they are to be applied when selecting teams for a specific event.

EVENTS

The Selection Policy applies to the selection of Club representative teams for the following events:

AYC Pennant Teams

Intra Club Winter Pennant Teams

Midweek Ladies Pennant Teams

City Of Clarence Championships

Shoreline Hotel Doubles Challenge

Glenorchy Challenge

Stringlab Pre AYC Series

and other team events that may be developed.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Ability

For the purposes of this document Ability is defined as the level of competitiveness that a player is usually capable of. Ability is determined by the following:

M & T assessment of a player based on previous performance in similar events

Previous performance in recent Club events

Previous performance in recent external events

Club gradings - (Note: A review of the means by which Club gradings are determined is required)

External gradings

Player Potential

Development opportunities are assessed by M & T based on performance at lower levels of competition, observations of performance in other events (and activities). The use of this criterion is aimed at providing players with opportunities to develop skills and confidence by participating at levels above that which they have previously.

Player Requirements

Merit of selection based on player requirements is to be determined by M & T. The use of this criterion is aimed at providing players with opportunities to participate with members who they are sociable with, meeting transport requirements, study commitments etc. It would normally be applicable in events where travelling to matches at other Clubs was involved.

Club Sportsmanship

Club sportsmanship is determined by the level of support a player has offered for other Club events and activities, reliability and commitment as a team member and availability in times of player shortages. This would be used as a means to separate players who were otherwise similar.

CRITERIA ORDER

The criteria are to be applied in an order that fits the Club’s requirements for a specific event. Similar events have been grouped into categories where the requirements are similar.

JUNIOR TEAMS AND EVENTS

Event Type: Longer Term Pennants etc.

Typical Events: JDC Friday Night Pennant

Participation is the main thrust of Geilston Bay’s involvement in Junior activities such as the JDC Friday Night Pennant. The aim of the selection process is to provide our juniors with an environment that encourages them to participate.

The JDC Friday Night Pennant is presently one in which Clubs nominate the Section appropriate for their teams and are not dependent on previous performance or player ratings to achieve this.

Juniors are to be selected in a Pennant section that is appropriate for their general level of play but as much as possible they are to be selected with other players with whom they are sociable, have similar playing abilities and are likely to be supportive of.

Age is considered when selecting teams with older players promoted to higher sections ahead of younger players.

Selection Criteria:

1.Ability to compete in Section

2.Age (may override 1. above)

3.Requests to play together

4.Convenience for transport etc.

Event Type: Short Term or One-Off Events

Typical Events: City of Clarence Championships, Glenorchy Challenge

The aim of selections for these events is provide a competitive Club team, offer players a competitive opportunity and reward those players that have shown good performances and participated actively in the past. In general terms those players who would next be ineligible for these events will be given some priority.

Selection Criteria:

1.Ability

2.Age (future eligibility)
